Comprehensive Sports Injury Treatment Tailored to Your Needs

When sport is part of your identity, injury can feel like everything has been put on pause. At Cairnhill Physiotherapy, we focus on more than just symptom relief. We assess how your body moves, why the injury occurred, and what is needed to restore strength, control, and confidence.

Your treatment begins with a thorough biomechanical assessment and a clear understanding of your sport’s specific demands. From there, we design a tailored rehabilitation programme that supports your performance goals while respecting your recovery timeline.

Our approach combines hands-on therapy, functional strength work, sport-specific retraining, and injury prevention strategies. Whether you are recovering from an ACL tear, managing a recurring strain, or working on better movement efficiency, we guide you through each step with purpose and precision.

This is recovery backed by science and shaped around you.

Common Sports Injuries We Treat

Sports injuries aren’t all dramatic tumbles or high-impact collisions. Sometimes it’s the gradual wear, the overuse, or the one-rep-too-many that does it. At Cairnhill Physiotherapy, we treat a wide range of sports injuries with targeted rehabilitation that fits both your goals and your game.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tears

ACL injuries are common in sports involving pivoting, jumping, or sudden directional change. They often cause a popping sound at the moment of injury, followed by swelling, instability, and difficulty weight-bearing. Rehabilitation involves structured strength and neuromuscular training, joint control work, and return-to-sport progressions.

Rotator Cuff Injuries

Painful overhead movements or weakness with lifting can signal an issue in the rotator cuff, a group of muscles and tendons that stabilise the shoulder. Common in swimming, tennis, and weightlifting, treatment includes manual therapy, progressive loading, and movement retraining to restore strength without aggravating the joint.

Hamstring Strains

Hamstring injuries range from a light pull to a significant tear, often occurring during sprinting or kicking sports. Treatment is guided by the grade of the injury and includes progressive strength work, flexibility training, and a graded return-to-sport programme tailored to your specific activity demands.

Shin Splints

Shin splints are a frequent complaint among runners and athletes who suddenly increase training intensity. They present as dull, aching pain along the inner edge of the shin. We manage them through load adjustment, strengthening of lower limb structures, movement analysis, and advice on footwear or training surfaces.

Achilles Tendinopathy

This condition tends to creep in with repeated strain on the Achilles tendon, especially in running and jumping sports. Pain typically worsens after activity and may feel stiff in the morning. Our sports physios use progressive loading, eccentric strengthening, and biomechanical corrections to manage symptoms and prevent recurrence.

Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow

Despite the names, these tendon injuries are common in anyone doing repetitive gripping, lifting, or desk work. Tennis elbow affects the outside of the elbow, while golfer’s elbow targets the inside. Both cause pain, reduced strength, and irritation with everyday tasks. At Cairnhill, treatment focuses on easing the strain with hands-on therapy, tendon loading exercises, and activity adjustments.

Our Sports Physiotherapy Services

Effective sports injury treatment starts with understanding more than just what hurts. At Cairnhill Physiotherapy, your first session includes a comprehensive assessment of movement patterns, muscle imbalances, joint control, and sport-specific demands. We want to know how the injury happened, what’s holding you back, and how we can help you move forward, with confidence and control.

Our sports physio services may include:

  • Manual therapy to relieve tightness, reduce restriction, and restore joint mobility.
  • Targeted strength and conditioning tailored to your sport and recovery stage.
  • Biomechanical analysis and correction to improve technique and reduce reinjury risk.
  • Return-to-play planning and sport-specific testing to guide a safe comeback.
  • Education and load management strategies so you understand how to train smart and stay healthy.

What should I expect during my first appointment?
Your first session includes a detailed assessment of your condition, covering your medical history, symptoms, lifestyle factors, and movement patterns. From there, we’ll explain our findings, begin treatment where appropriate, and outline a plan tailored to your goals.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your specific injury or condition. Some acute issues resolve within a few sessions, while chronic or complex conditions may require a longer treatment plan. We’ll regularly review your progress to ensure the plan stays relevant and effective.
Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?
No, you don’t need a referral to book an appointment. You can come straight to us, whether it’s for an existing injury, a new concern, or a second opinion.
Is treatment covered by ACC?
Yes, if your injury is accident-related or meets ACC’s criteria for gradual onset injuries, you’ll be eligible for subsidised physiotherapy. We can help you lodge a claim or continue treatment under an existing one. Just let us know at the time of booking.
