At our physio clinic in Epsom, we have a highly qualified team of health professionals capable of getting you out of pain and fully mobile again. But for all of our experience and expertise, we can’t help you achieve these goals without your input. At our clinic, we take full responsibility for your ongoing care and treatment. But when you’re at home, you’re the one who has to take charge of your injury rehabilitation. We know you’ll do your best to stay on track with your recovery – sadly, many others don’t! We have seen the research that proves it.
A recent academic study titled “Barriers to treatment adherence in physiotherapy outpatient clinics” confirms this concerning fact. It showed that the overwhelming majority of physiotherapists all over the world do everything they can to make their patients well again. But the study also revealed that a staggering 7 out of 10 physio patients do not follow their treatment plan as they should. This greatly slows down and prolongs their recovery, meaning they are in pain and immobile for longer than they should be.
The work we will do with you at our physiotherapy clinic in central Auckland obviously plays a massive part in your overall treatment. At these sessions, we can monitor your injury and your progress, and supervise any exercises we think will be beneficial for you. However, in many cases, we will also put in place an at-home recovery programme that includes exercises that need to be done on a regular basis. We do this so you can continue to strengthen the injury and improve your function and mobility. It also speeds up the healing process, minimises the chances of incurring another injury in the future, and will give us important progress markers. Crucially, this valuable at-home work will also see you get out of pain much sooner.
Obviously, we can’t be with you every waking hour of every day to supervise your recovery. And with Covid lockdowns still a fact of life in Auckland, it’s even more important that you stick to the plan at home if you can’t come into our Epsom physio clinic. So please, don’t be one of that 70% who doesn’t adhere to their recovery programme. Be one of the 30% who do the right thing and who are smart enough to understand that injury rehab really is a team effort.
